Most of us associate all the changes that occur in our breasts with pregnancy. And these changes include dark nipples or just darkening of the areola. Even though this is not wrong, you may also develop them even when you are not pregnant.
Is it normal? My answer to this question is that it depends on many factors. Black women have naturally dark lips which are perfectly normal. While whites have purple nipples. I also know that most men find black nipples to be sexually attractive and therefore women also look for ways to darken them.
If for a reason you don’t know you suddenly get black areolas, then you at least deserve to know the causes. I am also going to tell you the remedies for this condition.
Check out the causes of black nipples below and find out which one could be responsible for your condition.
Many changes occur to a woman during the gestation period, all in preparation for the coming of the baby. Some of the changes include breasts enlarging and darkening of nipples. Most cases are reported in pregnant women. This is due to your hormones overworking. During Pregnancy, your body produces high levels of progesterone and estrogen. These hormones stimulate a temporary increase of melanin, the substance responsible for your pigmentation, in your body. Production of more melanin is a recipe for your skin to become darker particularly in areas with more pigment like your areoles and genitals.
Dark nipples are also an early sign of pregnancy. If you notice your nips turning black accompanied with morning sickness and weight gain, then perhaps it is time you went for a pregnancy test. Congratulations in advance.
Hormones tend to be on overdrive during our menses. Apart from causing the infamous mood swings, periods also cause changes in the breast area. some women develop big black areolas. The change in nipple size and color during menstruation is caused by hormonal imbalance in the body. Your boobs will often return to their normal state at the end of your period.
Puberty is all about a raging of hormones. These hormones bring about very many changes, especially in your appearance. One of these changes is the development of breasts. Breast enlargement can be accompanied by big nipples which can turn black. They may go back to their normal color or remain dark after puberty.
Birth control pills
This darkening can be due to hormonal changes in the body due to starting birth control pills. The condition will change your body adjusts to the contraceptives in 2 to 3 months. Most ladies have complained about their nipples getting dark after they start the pill. Even though there is little information on why this happens, we can as well conclude that it is because contraception is designed in a way to fake that you are pregnant so that you don’t get pregnant again. and because we get dark nipples during pregnancy then we can also have the same condition when on the pill.
Hairs around the nipples
First, let us be clear on this issue, most ladies have hairs growing on and around their nipples. Another fact is that we always try so hard to remove these hairs because we believe they are ugly or embarrassing. And because of desperation, we end up using very crude tools to remove them. Shaving the hair is a probable cause of black nipples.
Our skin weathers as we age, we start developing wrinkles, stretch marks and skin sagging as we enter our old age. These changes may also include dark nipples and they are perfectly normal. They can also be an early sign of menopause. This is called perimenopausal transition.
Other causes include diabetes and various medication.
Home remedies for dark nipples
The condition is mostly caused by hormonal functions in the body and therefore I do not advice on interfering with these processes. In most cases, the darkness will go away on its own. But if you are concerned with the condition, try out the following home remedies.
Almond oil and milk
Almond can lighten dark nipples without causing any side effect. Milk is a natural moisturizer and therefore mixing them will give you a perfect remedy.
You can also blend a mixture of almond and milk and then apply it on your nipples. Leave it for 30 minutes before washing it off with clean water. do this every day. They will start changing color after three days.
Lime juice and honey
Lime juice contains acidic content which makes it a natural bleaching agent. Honey is a natural moisturizer and will prevent your nipples from drying and cracking.
Mix one tablespoon of lime with a tablespoon of honey. Use your fingers to massage them with the mixture. Wait for half an hour then rinse it off with water.
